"The Reinhold family treasure, the Golden Apple, is hidden somewhere within this village. To whomever successfully locates this treasure, I offer the whole of my estate."
— The contents on Baron Augustus Reinhold's will, Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Baron Augustus Reinhold is a major character in Professor Layton and the Curious Village. He was the baron of St. Mystere and Flora's father, before his death a few years prior to the events of the game.

Biography[]

Appearance[]

The baron only ever appears in flashbacks and in a portrait in Reinhold Manor as a man with a larger build and a beard and moustache, with his hair balding on the top of his head. He wears a white ruffled shirt, grey trousers, and grey and black shoes, with a red coat with blue trimming on top. There are often several rings on both of his hands.

Personality[]

Baron Reinhold is shown to be a loving father, caring so much for his daughter Flora that he commissioned a robot replica of his wife to raise her after she passed away, although Flora appeared to be terrified of the robot. At one point, an entire amusement park was built for Flora as a gift.

He appeared to have a fondness for puzzles and riddles, even going so far as to set his inheritance up as a final riddle to be solved, which leads Luke to believe that Professor Layton and the baron would’ve gotten along well.

Pre-Game Life[]

While the baron's daughter, Flora, was still very young, his wife Violet died from influenza. After cheering up after her death, he vowed to love Flora as much as he had loved his wife and cared for her greatly.

Only a few years later, he found out that he was terminally ill. Knowing that his time was running out, he decided to build a village to protect her from the outside world until she could be cared for properly. Along with his long-time friend Bruno, who had experience building and constructing machines, he began his work. They built the village of St. Mystere and its residents. The robots that populated the town were built to be puzzle enthusiasts in order to test anyone who came there. The person he was looking for to take care of Flora needed to be smart enough to pass through the riddles set before them.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village[]

Reinhold's second wife, Dahlia, decided to send a letter to Professor Layton to enlist his help in solving her late husband's inheritance riddle. Layton wished he'd had the chance to meet him before he passed away. Luke Triton admitted that the two would've gotten along.

During their second day in St. Mystere, Layton and Luke discover the baron's journal. Inside, the baron spoke fondly about something but they didn't understand the context. After it was revealed that all of the villagers are robots, the two realized that the journal was referring to Lady Dahlia. She was originally built as a replacement for Violet but the baron was very upset about the identicality, so he had Bruno change its personality into Lady Dahlia. However, Flora was then terrified by the sudden change, which was something the baron regretted.

When Luke unlocked the door to the hidden room in Reinhold Manor, he, Flora, and Layton found piles of gold and riches. A voice recording of the baron stated that taking the treasure would result in a complete shutdown of the village, including the robot residents. The baron wanted Layton to close St. Mystere forever, but Layton decided it was Flora's choice. With her kind heart, Flora decided not to take her inheritance and to leave the village as it is instead, as a thanks for the villagers' care.
