"Layton and Luke board the Molentary Express, hoping to learn what happened to the doctor. The extravagance of the train, known as a "cruise ship on rails", astounds them. Surrounded by the luxury of the Molentary Express, the pair begin their investigation."

The Legendary Molentary Express is the first chapter in Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box.

Plot[]

Layton and Luke decide to begin their investigation of the Elysian Box while aboard the Molentary Express, despite Luke being slightly distracted by the luxury of their surroundings. They visit the dining car but are informed by Chester that there are no available tables. After waiting for a short amount of time, a table becomes available but Babette insists on cutting ahead of them. Chester apologises and suggests they visit the observation deck while they wait for another table to become available.

DB Observation Deck

View from the observation deck.

Layton and Luke spend some time admiring the view of the countryside from the observation deck. With a better understanding of the entire train’s layout, they soon decide to begin the investigation proper. On their way back towards the dining car, they encounter Mr Beluga, the owner of the Molentary Express, and Layton expresses his enthusiasm for trains, although Beluga is quick to excuse himself and leave.

Upon returning to the dining car, Layton and Luke are finally shown to an unoccupied table, but as they order their food they notice Beluga verbally berating the staff, including Macaroon for the quality of the food and Chester for the choice of painting on the wall.

DB 1 Luke Holding Tom's Shoe

Tom's shoe.

Enroute towards their carriage after finishing their meal, they find Babette speaking to Inspector Chelmey, demanding that he, Layton, and Luke immediately launch a search for her missing child. Layton agrees to help her. Chelmey shows them the evidence gathered so far: a small shoe and the child’s name, Tom. Luke states that he didn’t think children with feet that small were able to walk.

DB 1 Cap In Kitchen

Tom's cap in the kitchen.

They begin the search by asking the other passengers, but none claim to have seen any young boys on the train. When they visit the kitchen, they find a small cap that matches Tom’s shoe, although it’s unclear how any child would manage to fit in the space they found it in.

DB 1 Flora In Disguise

The woman they bump into.

They accidentally bump into a woman in sunglasses carrying a small dog, who they both find oddly familiar. When they pass through the dining car again, they ask Chester about Tom. Chester explains that he witnessed a couple in the fourth carriage discussing a child. Layton and Luke question the couple, Capone and Mitzi, but their response is a vague and confusing description of the child they’d seen on board.

Layton and Luke meet again with Chelmey, who has already concluded that Tom must’ve accidentally fallen off the train, although Layton is insistent that this conclusion is incorrect. Later, Luke explains his feeling that they’re being followed from the shadows, to which Layton agrees.

They discover another of Tom’s shoes on the floor, the same side as the shoe Chelmey had shown them earlier. Layton reveals the truth; that Tom is actually a little dog, presumably the same dog the woman they bumped into earlier had been carrying.

FloraIncognito

Flora reveals herself.

They confront the woman on the observation deck, who reveals herself to be Flora in disguise. Flora explains that she followed them because she was afraid of being left alone. Layton agrees to allow her to accompany them on the investigation so long as she’s careful.

They return Tom to Babette. Chelmey is annoyed to find out that her child is actually a dog and accuses her of wasting their time. With the search over, Layton, Luke, and Flora decide to return to their quarters to rest.

The train screeches to a halt. Outside, Beluga scolds his nephew and train conductor, Sammy, for the fault. Sammy explains that the issue is a broken train on the line, which Layton helps them manoeuvre out of the way, allowing the train to continue its journey to Dropstone.

Tom's Disappearance[]

While riding on the Molentary Express, Babette's little boy, Tom, manages to disappear. If the shoe he left behind is any indication, Tom must be a very young child. Where could a child that small have wandered off to on his own?

Solved[]

Tom's Disappearance[]

It turns out that Tom isn't a child, as was originally thought, but rather Babette's pet dog. It would seem that Babette's affection for Tom is so deep that she considers him to be much more than just a pet.
