After finding a tower-shaped key in the underground room, Layton and Luke make their way to the village. With the key in hand, Layton debates heading to the tower. However, after sensing a sinister presence near them, the professor devises a plan to out the fiend."

The Shadowy Intruder is the eighth chapter in Professor Layton and the Curious Village.

Plot[]

They return to the inn, where Layton is determined to discover the identity of whoever has been trying to hinder their investigation. Layton asks Beatrice for newspapers from the previous few days, and despite the fact that she is unable to find them, the fact that the newspapers are missing in the first place is just as helpful.

Before Layton can explain anything to Luke, Ramon arrives and escorts them to Reinhold Manor upon Inspector Chelmey’s request. On the way, the mysterious girl they met earlier that day appears again, urging them to stay away from the tower now that they’re in possession of the key. She vanishes before Layton can ask her why.

Chelmey Holding a Vase

Inspector Chelmey accusing Layton of the murder.

When Layton and Luke return to the manor, a shaky Matthew welcomes them back and shows them to the parlour. There, Chelmey accuses Layton of Simon’s murder, stating the blue vase given by Giuseppe earlier as evidence, since the vase was previously stored in the room Simon’s body was found in and the item had Layton’s fingerprints on it. Chelmey proceeds to shatter the vase and demands Layton hand over the tower key they found beneath the park.

CV 8 Reinhold Manor Window

A window smashed during Don Paolo's exit.

Layton is swiftly able to deduce that Chelmey is an imposter through a series of mistakes he makes as part of his disguise. It started with his lack of awareness of his wife’s name and his hatred of sweets, which contradicts an old newspaper article they found the same time the vase was touched. Layton also points out that he couldn’t have possibly entered the village after Simon’s death since the crank for the drawbridge went missing before his corpse was even discovered, so no one could enter, leave, or take anything out from that point. Additionally, there was no way he could have known about the key to the tower without having stalked them from the shadows.

CV 8 Tower Keyhole in the Wall

The keyhole in the wall.

With his cover blown, “Chelmey” reveals himself to be Don Paolo in disguise and escapes by shattering the window. Although Don Paolo proclaims to be Layton’s archnemesis, Layton doesn’t remember ever meeting him, only knowing of him through stories of his genius yet evil personality.

Layton and Luke decide to head to the tower next. Once they reach the dead end, they locate a small keyhole in the wall, located in the same position that the X was in on the note they found in the baron’s desk. When Luke inserts the tower key, the wall splits in half to reveal the entrance to the tower.

Solved[]

Inspector Chelmey[]

What a shock! Who could have imagined that Don Paolo, self-proclaimed arch-enemy of the professor, was posing as the Inspector in an effort to steal the Reinhold fortune? The true Inspector Chelmey never set foot in St Mystere and is probably at home in London enjoying tea and cakes right now.

The Tower Key[]

The note left by the baron in Archibald's desk gave Layton the clue he needed to realise the key would fit into the wall in the north of the village. From there, the professor and Luke could access the path to the tower.
