"Man has always dreamt of eternal life. Even today, with all our technology and medicines, we must all face death one day."
— Schrader to Emmy Altava, Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva

Dr. Andrew Schrader is a recurring character in the Professor Layton series. He is Professor Layton's old mentor and good friend.

Biography[]

Appearance[]

Schrader is a fair-skinned man with gray hair, a beard and a mustache. He wears a brown suit jacket with no lapels and a single yellow button, matching trousers, and dull green shoes. Underneath his suit jacket is a white shirt and a blue necktie with yellow spots on it.

He also wears a brown fur coat with a red interior and a matching bowler hat with a blue lint. He never wears these in-game, however, only in his profiles and supplemental materials.

He also has glasses that he is seen wearing in the beginning of Diabolical Box and certain scenes in Eternal Diva.

Personality[]

Schrader is a kind man and an archaeologist who loves researching historical landmarks. However, his curiosity often gets him into trouble, and is usually forced to look to his students for help out of whatever said trouble is. He cares a lot for Professor Layton and they are close friends.

Professor Layton and the Last Specter[]

Emmy learns that Schrader donated a dinosaur skeleton to the museum that she visits whilst searching for Inspector Grosky.

Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva[]

As he, Layton and Emmy are headed to the theater, Luke reads that Schrader contributed to the construction of the Crown Petone in The Eternal Kingdom program.

He only briefly appears in the movie. He conducts research about Ambrosia with Emmy at his flat. They both watch the arrival of the submarine holding the 'losers' of the game for Eternal Life on television before Emmy leaves in a hurry.

Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box[]

In the beginning of the game, Schrader sends Layton a letter:

My dear Hershel.

Knowing you, I imagine you've already heard of the relic known as the Elysian Box. This strange antique is infamous for killing anyone who opens it. Truth be told, I am a bit dubious of the box's murderous reputation. But you know how I am. Once something piques my interest, I simply must get to the bottom of it.

(In Europe, the above paragraph says: As an archaeologist you are sure to have heard of the item known as the Elysian Box. Of course, it is more commonly known as "Pandora's Box", in reference to the famous myth. This nickname would appear to be well deserved since it is rumoured to kill whoever opens it. I'm dubious of this reputation, of course, but when my interest is piqued I simply must investigate.)

That's why I'm pleased as punch to tell you that the elusive item is finally in my possession. What's more, I believe I'm on the cusp of unraveling a great mystery tied to this box. For the moment, let's just say I have a theory, though I haven't been able to prove it yet.

Initially, it was my intention to finish my research before daring to open its lid. But I must confess that my curiosity is simply overpowering. In the unlikely event that anything should happen to me, please finish the work I've started here.

Your friend,

Andrew Schrader

The letter was sent three days before, so Layton and Luke decide to go to Schrader's flat in London. They arrive to find Schrader on the floor, dead, and the box gone. Layton finds an expired ticket for the Molentary Express and warns Luke not to say a word about it. They ring the police, and by chance, Inspector Chelmey and his assistant Barton arrive. After initial confusion, they discuss possible reasons for Schrader's death. Chelmey puts it down to natural causes, but Layton and Luke both prove that he was murdered. When Layton finds a torn photo in Schrader's hands, Chelmey gets agitated, takes the photo, and forces them to leave the room.

When they arrived at Folsense, the destination on the ticket, Chelmey reveals that Schrader went there for research and deduces that someone followed him from there and killed him to get the box. Since Beluga was doing business else ware in London at the time, Chelmey concludes that Sammy Thunder killed Schrader. However, Layton revealed Don Paolo as the true thief of the box, though he claims that Schrader was already on the floor when he arrived.

At this point, it was certainly assumed that the Elysian Box had killed Schrader, who opened it after writing that letter. However, at the end of Diabolical Box, it is revealed that the Elysian Box had only put Schrader in a deep coma, and he recovered a few days afterward in hospital. In the credits, Layton, Luke and Flora are seen reading a newspaper article about his recovery. Layton decided to cancel his symposium appointment in London to visit him as soon as they return.

Professor Layton and the Unwound Future[]

In Unwound Future, while Layton and Luke are in Future London, they visit Green Hospital, which now houses an ill and elderly Schrader. Layton became suspicious about this Schrader as he failed to acknowledge or even be a little surprised by younger Luke's presence in the future. It turns out that this is because he was later revealed to be in fact Don Paolo in disguise.
