Either Oar... (A Convenient Tool in the UK version) is a puzzle in Professor Layton and the Last Specter.

Puzzle

US Version

A weary old sailor is describing a special tool he uses when he's out in his boat:

"Sometimes when I'm out in my boat on a fine, warm day, I get so tired. So I dig out a special tool, and suddenly I don't have to to lift a finger to move my boat. You might think it's unfair, but nobody minds helping out an old man like me."

What tool is he talking about?

UK Version

A man describes the tools on his boat to you.

"These here tools are the ones I use on me boat. Sometimes I just feel knackered, so I get one of these tools out and it makes life a whole lot easier... What? No, I don't use it to get the knots out of me back! The tool I have in mind helps me move this boat when I'm tired. Look, I'm an old man and everyone does their best to look out for me."

Which tool is he talking about?

US Version

"With those other tools, I'd have to paddle myself, and that's just more work for me! The tool you're looking for--I wouldn't have to paddle my boat at all to get it moving!"

UK Version

If the old man has to paddle, he'll just tire himself even more. When he uses the tool he describes, he can move the boat without having to paddle at all!

US Version

"What do you use Tool A for? It looks like it belongs in your ear, not in a boat. I can't see why you'd bother with that when you're out on the water."

UK Version

What's tool A used for? It looks like some kind of cleaning implement.

It doesn't look as if this one would be much help in moving the boat forward.

US Version

"Tool D looks familiar, but I wouldn't touch one of those if I didn't have to. Too much work for an old man like me. I mean, sure, it'll move a boat, but only if you put your back into it!"

UK Version

Tool D looks like an ordinary paddle.

This might be what he usually uses to move the boat, but it won't be much good when he's tired.

US Version

"You know what's the best kind of tool for boating? One where you just hook one end over your boat and the other end over someone else's, and then you let the other person do all the work, tugging you along while you catch forty winks!"

UK Version

What sort of device is tool B?

Well, there's some sort of hook on both ends. It looks like something you could use to attach two boats together. If you did that, couldn't one of the boats pull the other one along?

Solution

Incorrect

US Version

Too bad!

"The tool you're looking for--it makes it so I don't have to do any work at all except set it up and go!"

UK Version

Too bad.

The tool you're looking for makes things really, really easy.

Correct

You're right!

US Version

"That's the tool I use when I want to sit back and let someone tow the ol' boat for me. I just hook it over the edge of each boat easy as that!"

UK Version

"That's the tool I use when I want me boat towed. I just hook it over the side of both boats and Bob's your uncle!"
