Embroidery Enigma is a puzzle in Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy. The puzzle must be solved in order to progress the story.

Puzzle

Four different patch designs have been sewn onto this plain handkerchief in a particular sequence. The pattern starts in the top-left corner and follows the orange line towards the centre.

Study the sequence carefully and work out which patches belong in the four empty spaces on the handkerchief. Place the patches in the appropriate spots.

Hints

Click a Tab to reveal the Hint.

If the patches themselves are making this puzzle difficult for you, try replacing them with numbers.

The first patch in the sequence, the three, would be 1, as would the next patch. The third patch in the sequence, the snowflake, would be 2. Use the Memo Function to make a note of all these numbers.

If you've labelled the patches with numbers, the sequence from the starting point to the top-right corner is 112123. Heading down from there, the sequence is 12341.

Put both of those together and you have 11212312341.

Try cutting the sequence before the final 1. Can you see some kind of pattern?

The sequence 11212312341112123 takes you to the bottom-left corner, but if you look closely, you'll see that after 1121231234, the sequence starts to repeat.

Focus on this set of numbers and you'll be able to see how the sequence is built up. You start with one design for the first stage, then add a new design in each subsequent stage, until all the designs are used. Or in other words: 1, 12, 123, 1234.

Once all four patch designs have been sewn on, the sequence starts again. Consider the patches around the outer edge. You know what the sequence is, so you know that the first blank square you come to should contain a tree, and the blank square above it should have a snowflake.

To work out where the patches should go in the two blank spaces that remain, you could also try working backwards from the goal.

Solution

Incorrect

Too bad.

Once you spot the sequence, you'll see its actually very simple.

Correct

You've got it all sewn up!

A new patch design is added at the end of each stage of the sequence. Once all four designs have been added, the whole thing starts again from the beginning.
