Fowl Food is a puzzle in Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy. The puzzle must be solved in order to progress the story.

Puzzle

This tropical bird has a terribly unbalanced diet, eating only one kind of fruit per day: either apples or oranges. Each day, the bird keeper places fruit into each of the four coloured bird boxes according to his chart. The bird decides which king of fruit he would eat that day, and then eats every piece of it.

Last week, the bird keeper noted that the bird took fruit from the blue box five times, the red box four times, the green box five times, and the yellow box three times. Which fruits did the bird eat on each day?

Hints

Click a Tab to reveal the Hint.

First of all, add up the numbers on the side of the chart to find out how many pieces of fruit the bird ate over the course of the week.

Once you've done that, make a note of how many apples and oranges were provided on each day.

Look at the last four days of the week, starting with Thursday. What do you notice?

Look at the last four days of the week, starting with Thursday. You'll notice that either two apples or two oranges were eaten on each of these days. That means that the bird ate eight pieces of fruit over the course of those four days, regardless of which kind of fruit he hose to eat.

The bird ate 17 pieces of fruit in total, so if you remove these eight, that leaves nine pieces of fruit for the first three days.

The bird ate three pieces of fruit on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. In order to have three pieces on Monday, did he eat oranges or apples? How, what about Tuesday and Wednesday?

Think about the yellow bird box. You know that the bird ate three pieces of fruit on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and you should have worked out that this means he ate from the yellow bird box on each of those days.

You also know that he made only three visits to the yellow box in total, so he can't have visited the yellow bot again during the rest of the week...

Solution

Incorrect

Too bad.

Think carefully about which bird boxes the bird ate from each day.

Correct

That's right!

The bird may not have a balanced diet on a day-to-day basis, but over the week it almost evens out.
