Lucky Tablecloth is a puzzle in Professor Layton and the Last Specter.

Puzzle

Your lucky tablecloth is damaged, and you want to salvage it.

US Version

You must start by cutting off the shaded area. Next, you must make two straight cuts along the dotted lines and end up with three pieces.

Sewing these pieces together will give you a smaller square tablecloth with five complete four-leaf clovers!

Draw two lines on the cloth to show where you should make your cuts.

UK Version

After cutting off the shaded area, you make two straight cuts along the dotted lines and end up with three pieces.

Sewing these pieces together gives you a smaller square tablecloth decorated with five complete four-leaf clovers.

Draw two lines on the cloth to show the two straight cuts you make.

Hints

US Version

Try thinking about where the cloth needs to be joined to create five complete four-leaf clovers.

That should give you some ideas for how to form the square.

UK Version

Try thinking about where the cloth needs to be joined to give five four-leaf clovers.

That should give you some ideas for how to form the square.

One of the pieces will contain exactly four squares of material.

US Version

One of the lines you need to cut starts from the top-right side of the shaded square area that you cut off first and travels diagonally to the right.

The piece created by this cut is an isosceles triangle.

UK Version

One of the lines you should cut starts from the top-right of the piece of cloth you had to cut out and travels down diagonally to the right.

The piece cut off is an isosceles triangle.

US Version

The second cut starts from the lower-left corner and heads up diagonally to the right. If you combine this cut with the one described in Hint 3, the three pieces created can be combined to create a rectangular tablecloth with five four-leave clovers on it!

UK Version

One of the cuts starts from the bottom-left corner and heads up diagonally to the right.

If you already drew the line for the cut described in Hint 3, you should know where this next cut must stop.

The pieces created by these cuts can be used to make the square tablecloth you were aiming for.

Solution

Incorrect

US Version

Too bad!

Did the new tablecloth have five complete four-leaf clovers?

UK Version

Too bad.

Did the new tablecloth have five complete four-leaf clovers?

Correct

US Version

Correct!

The tablecloth was cut as shown above.

It's a bit smaller, but the new tablecloth looks fantastic, especially with the five four-leaf clovers. And since you salvaged it instead of throwing it out, I guess it's a lucky tablecloth after all.

UK Version

Cutting insight!

The cloth has to be cut as shown in the diagram.

Your little tablecloth accident gave the four-leaf clovers a new lease of life!
