Taste Test (Bun Gourmet in the UK version) is a puzzle in Professor Layton and the Last Specter.

Puzzle

US Version

There are four different types of buns in this assortment of 12.

There are more cream buns than butter buns, fewer chocolate buns than jam buns, and fewer jam buns than cream buns.

If buns of the same type always have the shape, what is the fewest number of buns you'd have to taste to determine which shapes are each type?

UK Version

There are four different types of bun in this assortment of 12 and each type is a different shape.

There are more cream buns than butter buns, fewer chocolate buns than jam buns and fewer jam buns than cream buns.

What is the minimum number of buns you would have to taste to determine which shape represents each type?

Hints

Click a Tab to reveal the Hint.

US Version

On the table we can see there is a group of four buns, two groups of three buns and a group of two buns.

From the puzzle, which types of buns do you think there are the most and fewest of?

UK Version

Looking at the table, you can see that there is a group of four, two groups of three and a group of two.

Which types of bun are the most and least numerous?

US Version

Let's compare the amounts of buns described in the puzzle:

Cream > Butter

Chocolate < Jam

Jam < Cream

So put another way:

Cream > Butter

Cream > Jam > Chocolate

UK Version

Let's examine the clues in the puzzle:

Cream > Butter
Chocolate < Jam
Jam < Cream

Put another way, we get:

Cream > Butter
Cream > Jam > Chocolate

So what can we say for sure?

US Version

Based on the puzzle, we know there are more cream buns than any other type. Therefore we can exclude the largest group on the table from our taste test.

That leaves two groups of three and one group of two. Since Jam > Chocolate, one of the remaining groups of three must be jam, while the group of two must be chocolate. We can also skip that group in our test.

UK Version

The previous hint should have helped you work out that there are more cream buns (four) than anything else.

That leaves two groups of three and one group of two.

Since jam > chocolate, one of the groups of three must be jam, while the smallest group, the group of two, must be chocolate.

US Version

Since you know which buns are in the biggest and smallest groups, all you need to do is determine which of the remaining two groups of buns is which.

And you don't really need to taste both to figure that out, do you?

UK Version

You already know which are the most and least numerous types of bun, so all you need to do is identify the remaining two types.

And you don't really need to taste both to work that out, do you?

Solution

Incorrect

US Version

Too bad!

Try figuring out which buns are in the biggest group on the table.

UK Version

Too bad.

Have you worked out which type of bun is the most numerous?

Correct

US Version

Sweet deal!

You only need to taste one.

From the puzzle, you know the cream buns and the chocolate buns are the most numerous and the fewest, respectively, so you can skip the largest and smallest groups on the table. That leaves only two groups of three buns. If you try one bun from either group, you'll instant know which types are which.

UK Version

Sweet!

You only need to taste one.

You can work out from the puzzle that the cream buns are most numerous and the chocolate buns the least numerous, so you can already identify those.

That leaves two groups of three buns. All you need to do is taste one bun from either group, and you'll know instantly which is which!
