The Crazy Keyholes is a puzzle in Professor Layton and the Unwound Future.

Puzzle

US Version

To open the door, you need to combine the three stamp-like key pieces (1, 2, and 3) so they form shapes that can be inserted into all the keyholes (A through G) that will accommodate them.

The key pieces can be rotated left or right to fit together, but they can't be turned over.

Check off all the keyholes that will work.

UK Version

This strange door will only open if these three stamp-like key pieces. 1, 2 and 3, are inserted into every keyhole that will accommodate all three of them at once.

Note that the key pieces displayed below are not to scale.

Tick all the keyholes that will work.

Hints

US Version

Don't forget about the Memo function! You can use it to draw in the shapes.

UK Version

Don't forget about the Memo Function! You can use it to draw in the shapes.

The most important thing is how you use key piece 2.

US Version

You can probably tell just by looking at it that C won't work.

Perhaps surprisingly, B does work!

Remember, you can rotate the key piece left or right, but you can't flip them over. Be sure to consider how each key piece can be rotated before trying to combine all three together.

UK Version

You can probably tell just by looking at it that C won't work. B, on the other hand, does work, surprisingly!

Note that you can rotate the key pieces clockwise or anticlockwise, but they have a handle on the back so they can only go in one way round. You have to push them in by holding the handle, which means that the shapes shown on the Touch Screen will be flipped when they're inserted.

C doesn't work.

US Version

A, B, and G all work.

Of the remaining three--D, E, and F--one doesn't work. Which is it?

You know, that z-shaped one is pretty suspicious...

UK Version

A, B and G all work.

Of the remaining three, D, E and F, one doesn't work. Which is it?

You know, that Z-shaped one looks pretty suspicious...

Solution

Incorrect

Too bad!

US Version

Remember, these are keys, so you can turn them left or right, but you only insert them one way round.

UK Version

Remember, these are keys, so you can rotate them freely, but you only insert them one way round.

Correct

US Version

Sharp eye!

A, B, D, F, and G are the correct five keyholes! C and E don't work.

The key pieces usually have to be rotated to fit into place. E looks like it should work, but piece 2 is actually backward.

UK Version

Sharp eyes!

The correct keyholes are A, B, D, F and G. C and E don't work.

The key pieces often have to be rotated to fit into place. E looks as though it should work, but piece 2 is actually backwards.
