Puzzle

US Version

Below are five blocks. Can you fit them into the shape of Professor Layton's top hat without overlapping the pieces or leaving any spaces empty?

You can rotate or flip the blocks.

UK Version

Can you fit these five pieces together in the shape of Professor Layton's top hat without overlapping the pieces or leaving any empty space?

You can flip and rotate the pieces in order to do it.

Hints

Click a Tab to reveal the Hint.

These hints will give you a method of completing the puzzle by flipping as few pieces as possible. Following this method, the only piece that should be flipped is UF011S1

US Version

Of course, you could solve the puzzle without flipping UF011S1, but to do that, you'll need to flip everything else instead.

UK Version

Of course, you could also complete the puzzle the other way round, which would mean flipping UF011S2 and UF011S3.

US Version

If you flip UF011S1, don't flip or rotate UF011S2. Just place it in the top-left corner as is.

UK Version

If you flip UF011S1, then UF011S2 doesn't need to be rotated. Place it in the top-left corner of the hat.

US Version

Flip UF011S1, then rotate it so the long side is laying flat. Then slide it into the bottom-left corner to form part of the hat's brim. Now rotate UF011S3 90 degrees clockwise. Slide it next to UF011S1 to form the rest of the brim.

UK Version

Flip UF011S1 and position it horizontally. This is part of the hat's brim. The other part of the hat's brim is formed by UF011S3 when it is rotated.

US Version

If you've followed all of the hints, the only pieces left to place are UF011S4 and UF011S5. If you rotate UF011S5 180 degrees...

UK Version

Make the shortest arm of UF011S3 a part of the brim. All you have to do now is slot in UF011S4 and UF011S5, and the puzzle is complete.

Solution

Correct

US Version

Top notch!

These five blocks actually spell Layton in Japanese. Pretty cool, huh?

UK Version

Fanhatstic!

This puzzle is a variation on a traditional tangram. In tangram puzzles, the same seven pieces are combined to create various shapes.

Maybe we should call this five-piece version a Laytangram!

Trivia

While this puzzle remains the same in all versions, in the Japanese version the colors of all five blocks were black. This was changed in the international versions so that each of the five blocks were given a different color.
