The background image needs to be fairly large so it won't be stretched too much. For example ours is 1920 by 1080 px (fullHD), but it is re-sized. You probably won't find any images with that size. Something like this should be fine (I just searched google for "professor layton artwork"). As for the colors, you will probably want to match them to the image you choose (like with the above you can go blue/green).
Alternatively you can use a background that splits like the German wiki has.
